Does anyone use a '5 gallon drum' with a camping gas ring, as a source of heat, and does it work!!
Mick

No.

Have you any idea how long it will take to boil fifty gallons of water with a wee ring like that...

It takes me about two hours to boil up my wax melter, and that takes approx four gallons, and that is using propane not butane.

Frankly it will cost you more in gas than the frames are worth.

And the real trick would be how to get 50 gallons in a 5 gallon drum.

I am in the process of acquiring a 45 gallon drum from Freecycle

I intend to light a firkin sized bonfire under it.. so I can boil up hive parts in NaOH to sterilize.

50 gallons will definitely take a lot of fuel to bring it to a boil

Apologizes read and miss read obviously

However even heating 5 galls takes a LOT of fuel.

It may well pay to use rubbish as fuel.

if you are doing this near home, you can fill with hot water.
if you then have a large gas ring ( sort used to heat buckets of bitumen )
if it's in a sheltered spot ( no draught to take away heat)
if you have a propane supply

then yes, you can do this
;)

If you get a frame steamer the recovered wax covers your costs.

I have an acient burco type water boiler and had a good boil up over the weekend, great for cleaning the slotted zinc excluders, one dip and they are like new.

I've got a Burco from freecycle but it won't do BBs and supers. What will - ecomically?

looking at your suffix it should be 2 types of people in the world as binary only deals with 0s and 1s decimal does however deal with 10 whilst hexidecimal deals with 16 0-9 and a-f

I use a propane gas Burco boiler, and I can boil about 200 shallow frames in about 90 minutes. I just use tap water without washing soda. I haven't used a frame steamer, but I expect they would be much slower.

Sherwood - what is 10 in binary representation? Doh!
