Hi guys,

A friend of mine purchased this product from thornes

BienenWohl - 1000ml, regenerates colonies and protects against varroa

It states its a 3.2% solution of oxylaic acid. It does not say how to use it but says that only 10-15ml are needed per colony. I was always under the impression that 5ml's are need per full seam of bees.

can anyone offer any advice on what I should do with regards to dosing the correct amount and also, do you think its the right time to dose them as they have been out in force the last 2 days when the sun hits the hives

any advice much appreciated

Thanx Hivemaker, Very informative

Im still stuck though lol I dont have the swan neck applicator so will be just using a syringe but Im still not sure how much to dose. The info still says 10-15mls per colony. This solution is still a 3.2% solution with the addition of a few other ingredients designed to boost bee health. If i was to make my own oxylaic acid solution up at 3.2%, I would be told to use 5mls per seam

im confused, what should I do??

Give 5ml per seam of bees. Don't beat yourself up if you can't see where the bees are - just give 5ml per seam whether you can see bees or not.

I suspect the advice about the total is based on how many seams of bees there are likely to be in a colony, but it is not always easy to see where they are, especially if you have more than one brood box.

Best to follow the instructions of those that manufacture the product, and not Rooftops instructions for use,as this is not just oxalic acid........BienenWohl® is an emulsion, made up of citric acid and oxalic acid, together with essential oils, alcohols and propolis.

A single treatment of approx. 8 to 10 ml of BienenWohl® applied in winter, when there is no brood in the colony, will ensure the best possible start for the coming beekeeping season.
Efficacy: eradicates 95 to 98% of mite population.

:iagree:

There's more about dosing on this page http://www.bienenwohl.com /eng/anwendung.php

November / December: eradicating residual mites for best results

A bee colony in winter should not have more than 50 mites. A single treatment of approx. 8 to 10 ml of BienenWohl® applied in winter, when there is no brood in the colony, will ensure the best possible start for the coming beekeeping season. Efficacy: eliminates 95 to 98% of mite population.

Repeated or excessive dosing with BienenWohl® (e.g. 50 ml or more) at this time of year can result in bee losses.

Winter treatment: trickle Dany's BienenWohl® only into the beeways in the cluster area.

Has anybody else used this treatment? Is it as good as the manufacturers say it is?
