Or accept that BDI cover is not worthwhile. If your BKA subscribes just pay the minimum. Not perhaps an option if you want to share association apiaries, but practically could you guarentee all are covered anyway?

I'm not trying to divert the thread, BDI is possibly another thread topic. But since BDI has been raised, just pointing out there are other views.
 
Yes...always double up re spares.
I always have an AS set up for each hive, either on the stands or in the store room at the apiary.
Giving up on any Aberystwyth Freecycle I bought a new freezer just for frames so that I can store uncapped shallow frames and brood frames and frames of pollen.
 
It doesn't help when new beekeepers are told their nucs won't swarm within the first twelve months!

At this time of year it can take some weeks for hive numbers to be updated for insurance, so it's a good idea to overestimate when paying the original premium.
I did. I still got caught out :)
