Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've an empty catching box, which I've had next to the bees entrances with no luck. I have now placed the bottom part upside down over the bees. Still with no luck. Any suggestions ?

Can they be left to over winter, if they are indeed honey bees?

Can they be dug out?

Very unlike normal honey bees. The Africanised ones do like ground / very low nesting sites, and in much smaller spaces.

But we don't have Africanised bees in Europe.

There are many kinds of bee here and only one kind of honeybee. Most likely you have some other kind, maybe bumble bees. In which case they are best left alone. PLEASE do not dig them out. A picture (bee or entrance) would be useful.
