Bee Books for Children

Looking for an accurate informative and preferably European book suitable for an 8-12 year old child on beekeeping. This is a route I've explored before for my own youngest (and gave up) and there seem to be a few picture books of little substance and others which are a bit fanciful or plain inaccurate....the bees chased us away from our jam sarnies sort of thing....and worker bees as boys (aarrgghh).

Any ideas (apart from publishing my own)? Nephew's birthday coming up fast.

The Beeman by Laurie Krebs and Valeri Cis
Published by barefoot books

Starting with grandpas special beeman outfit, this lifts the lid on the hive and makes his grandson realise why bees are so important - a book to make childrens minds and mouths water.

Excellent book thoroughly enjoyed by my grandson.

hiya sus,

i havent read it but there is a new book that has been reviewed in bee craft by some people. It was commisioned by them and available on their website. Its called Hannah and the Honey Bees.

from what i have read of the reviews it seems really good. it is a fantasy story book but has lots of information in it.

If you can find it - and it's probably not in print any more the Ladybird book of the Honeybee is very good for children.
Still factually correct, good pictures.
Some will hate it though as IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY TOP BAR HIVES IN IT!

Maybe not suitable for a birthday as it won't be new but worth getting and a good book for anyone who knows nothing about bees. I used mine when I was 8 or 9 when I gave a talk to my class at school. I think it cost 2/6d.
