about the third time i have heard go on about amateur beekeepers, his record does not change...he should have stuck to the insurance buisiness

I wouldn't recommend complaining. All journalists love an argument - it gives them something extra to report on - they have no interest in the outcome or even rights or wrongs of any case, so long as it makes news.

The space cadet it pretty well known for his views on amateur beekeepers. However, some of his comments do have a germ of truth in them even if he exaggerates wildly and is factually wrong from time to time.

If you complain they will have him back on the programme spouting the same stuff again. Best not to encourage him but let them put him to one side as a National Treasure to be taken out and dusted off whenever a bit of controversy is needed. Never mind the facts, feel the strength of the opinions.

It's the venom he makes his points with, shrugging off academics like that, with the attitude of "when you've done this as much as I have, you'll know differently" and no other evidence himself. Lets hope government doesn't take heed or alot of funding could suddenly dry up.

Funny how someone marketing honey wants smaller competitors regulated/controlled...

Rooftops- interesting point. Amazing how you can get away with this under trade descriptions.

When someone says "trust me" I know he can't be trusted. Listening between the words I feel this man has an ulterior motive.

I asked, at the open day I was at on Saturday, "do the local farmers keep us informed about when they plan to spray?". The reply from the lady running the talk was "I am the Spray Liaison Officer for this branch. No - they don't."

More cooperation is definitely needed (beek-beek, beek-farmer and farmer-beek) but, frankly, if Big Bro gets involved it'll see many highly competent beeks giving up. My main worry would be that if this government decides regulation is necessary it will be given to a private company almost certainly tied to the agro-chemical industry.

he owns the rights to ' English Organic honey I believe' ?
I don't believe there is such a commodity , my own opinion of course :)
Don't want suing

Is there anywhere a hive can be sited, in England, that only has organic farms surrounding it for a radius of more than three miles?

I suspect not. I, therefore, also seriously doubt there is such a product.

I thought he was actually talking a bit of sense until 1904 cropped up LOL

I presume he boasts brown eyes, for he's for sure full of it...

I hope that as many people as possible respond to the inaccurate material and message given out on this programme.

Whilst agree to a certain extent with:

The public must be given an appropriate and accurate image of British Beekeeping. I hope as many people will respond as possible. Hopefully then the right message will go out in tomorrow’s programme.

It is a lot less than 3 miles at the closest points from the Isle of Wight to the mainland. Once IOW appeared it was only a matter of time before it reached the mainland whether it was transported naturally by bees or artificially by man.

When I listened to the iplayer it mentioned another broadcast on bees later in the day.

Did anyone catch that? Did it give a different point of view? Does anyone have a link on iplayer for it?

ANB I am not in denial that IOW disease aka Acarine was/is in the UK. After all I have handled the original slides of the discovery of it!

I am though thoroughly convinced that it did not wipe out the entire UK population of bees. That is frankly an old wives tale.

I know.

I'm just pointing out the utter c*** espoused by the expert on the radio this morning. He blames amateur beeks. My understanding is that as no-one, including the professionals, knew what was going on it would have reached the mainland with or without beeks' help and it wouldn't have made any difference whether the beeks were amateurs or pros.

It would have been a different story if beeks knew what was causing the problem, ignored it and there was no possibility of natural transmission to the mainland.

If he has blue eyes PH it's because he is 2 pints short of it...

OLD WIFES...... so that's the listening group of Radio Derby... and I thought it was a horse race !!!!

I wonder what his take on Dutch Elm Disease would be... probably has an expert's opinion!

So what is it that people are taking issue with?

In France everyone that has a hive has to register with the relevant authority - no big deal, no big brother, no one ever bothers me.

Honey bees aren't necessary for our survival and aren't the main pollinator of food crops.

Honey bees aren't declining, largely because people make money from breeding them, sadly not the case with so many other species.

Rather than just taking a swipe because HE was on the radio, how about some constructive criticism?

Chris

For me it wasn't so much what he said but how he said it. I'd never heard of him before listening to that clip but I could picture some guy ranting, face gradually getting redder and breathing becoming laboured as he got into a rant.

Being ex-forces myself though, I'm surprised he managed to restrain himself from swearing - or maybe they had to do multiple takes ;)
