The article suggests setting hornet traps in apiaries. What are these and how do they work?

All the info that you need is on these two factsheets.

Yes I had an email from our local BKA asking that we set up traps for monitoring purposes.
Hopefully too wet in the summer and too cold in the winter for them here.

The NBU stand at the BBKA spring event yesterday has samples of the asian hornet and small hive beetle. quite different from our hornets

They said lots of confusion in reported sightings between Queen french or German wasps and Asian hornet workers especial Dolichovespula media that come is both dark and light version.....but the sample Queen Asian Hornet was massive

Discussed a possible sighting on the I.O.Wight of an Asian Hornet , not yet confirmed as a true sighting...traps being set up this spring

Assuming we are talking about the same Asian Hornet we have here they survive our winters which are much colder than yours BUT of course it is only the Queens that hibernate somewhere snug and dry as it is with all social wasps.
