Apidea extension boxes

I have just bought a batch of Apidea super / brood extension boxes and am curious about the 2 narrow slots in the top of the boxes. Does anyone know if these serve any particular purpose or are just a manufacturing quirk? I am happy with the Apideas; I'm just curious.

pretty sure they are just to maintain spacing.
