Her daughters are not a consistent colour and so in my un-expert opinion I’d say she’s a pretty mongrel. Bit darker brown bands than one of mine.

i would say local 'hybrid'

and on that point, in the 4 years i've been keeping bees, i have bought 4 Queens. Each time i was told by association members it was a waste of money and actually, I have to admit, my best queens are daughters of a swarm i collected in my first year 2018 which i assume is a local mongrel. Were they correct to say a waste of money, who knows, but, I am very happy with the local queens i now have and cannot see myself buying another.

Ok only joking.....The irony is the person who got it spot on was an Irish beekeeper, and according to some they dont import bees over there she’s and island mated buckfast from BFD(Keld) I just wanted to prove a point when some start going on about bee race/types based on colour. She also produced some lovely very dark daughters last season and will again this year. Ian

Yes. I know Keld uses the two colour marking scheme for different lines but I wasn't sure if it was a trick question. Do other BF people use this sign?

Yes my Stöfen queen is quite dark as are about half her bees.

What point did you prove? We all know that buckfast these days are a very mixed bunch but I can't understand why colouration should not be an important criteria when talking about Amm. They are black bees after all, so colouration seems a pretty good starting point and indicator to me.
Seen that double dot before but that one was like a satsuma.

I don't think it was about proving anything. I saw it as a bit of fun just like the "spot the queen" photos in another thread.

Yes it was a bit tongue in cheek but there’s also plenty who pull a swarm out tree look at a dark queen and all of a sudden they become magical local bees I’m still chuckling about the beek from Ireland getting the answer, particularly after the fuss made by another Irish beekeeper.
