Have you thought of asking if you can see his bees, then you'll know the setup and will be able to compare it with your own.
Thanks, I have arranged to go with him to have a look,-- mind you I think he thinks I want to buy some hives off him.
 
Personally I would be tempted to try poly hives in a hot climate as others have said, cooler in the Summer and warmer in the Winter.

+ you can paint them light colours.
I have a new colony in a Langstroth and a spare hive, supers etc, if they build up well enough I am thinking of a getting a poly and see how the bees progression compares between the two.
