Instead of arguing ho many bees can dance on a hive tool I have a little suggestion for the forum.

Have we the ability to write the ultimate beginners guide to beekeeping covering the first three years?

Discuss.

Collectively probably, it would be a good guide for references , experiences etc..

That is a very good idea.I did an II course with Michael Collier a few years ago and a guy on the course had spent years working at Buckfast in Brothers Adams time he claimed that there was another film of Adam going through hives and explaining exactly what he was looking for.Made me think it would be a great resource for beekeepers if the likes of Murray McGregor,Pete Little and the like would do the same.

That's a very different project, and I rather think that Pete and Murray are too busy to have the time for filming. Proper filming (having done two shorts myself with the BBC) is incredibly time consuming. Five minutes can take a full day to achieve.

Surely this is doomed to a whole winter season of every contributor to the forum adding his ideas only to be contradicted by the rest of us?

It's going to be an entertaining closed season!:icon_204-2::icon_204-2:

Books are written on that very subject
At least in those books there is no room for rejoinder
Can you imagine the arguments that would ensue on every aspect?

Well it would be better reading than sitting down to watch EastEnders with the wife any day bring it!

Polyhive what I'm suggesting could be done in real time and a good mobile phone used for the job it would be a record of these guys working and there thoughts while doing it.
As an example Murray allocates a couple of minutes for inspecting a hive in the height of the season do most people know exactly what they would be looking for as say indicators of imminent swarming i.e backfilling and things like that.Just a few thoughts but I think it would be very useful.

This forum is an excellent source of the type of questions beginners ask. When experienced beekeepers write books for beginners they forget what these questions are. They forget the little practical details that beginners angst over. Beginners really need a mentor IMO, but I'm sure the expertise is here to write, as you say, the ultimate beginners guide to UK beekeeping.

I would be quite interested in getting involved in something like that. Perhaps profits from any book sales could go to running the forum? Did I say profits! :icon_204-2:

But whose opinion would you take?
JBM is right about the syrup bit
What on earth would happen when we started discussing swarm control?
Maybe you and PH could collaborate on one. At least there would be only two sides to your discussion

It's a decent idea and can be done with some patience and structure.

It should help beginners make their own decisions rather than follow tradition. Maybe a section on beekeeping myths.

Writer(s) would need to be completely unbiased in every aspect and even be willing to admit some of their own practices are simply out of preference rather than because it's the correct thing to do. Otherwise it's just another book by someone who does it their way and their way is best.

I am surprised at the reaction esp the mod.

What work?

Ss its very simple. If there are differing views its quite possible to just say, there are various views and here they are then have sub-chapters giving the views. Hardly rocket science is it? All the more informative for it no?
