When I know what to do whatever I see and I've got the werewithall (equipment to hand, skill etc) whatever I need to do.
i.e I dont have to go home and read, call someone or think about it.

I'll go with that, Hombre! :iagree:

A proper beekeeper will try hard to ensure they can anticipate the needs of their stocks. They will ensure they don't starve, will aim to keep them disease free, will try to keep swarming to a minimum, will take responsibility for their colonies when they prove troublesome and not just leave them to swarm out .... keep learning, particularly with regard to bee diseases, read books, attend improvement classes, bee groups whatever - and aim to be a better beekeeper for the sake of their bees .... Could take a lifetime, but
I do believe the more effort you put into beekeeping the more you get from it.

Hope this doesn't sound too harsh - it is the ideal for me.

Starting this thread and reading the posts actually got my brain working, I was going to post something glib like-

Spending more time working with your bees than on this forum:biggrinjester:

but my serious post would be-

having enough equipment, contacts, cash and knowledge to get your bees through this terrible year.

The equipment and cash is dependant on our personal circumstances.

The contacts and knowledge are available on this forum not worthy

Cage. OK - so maybe I'm not a GREAT beekeeper yet :biggrinjester:

lol, i'll see how good i am later if

1. i can see HM
2. i can pick her up
3. i can mark her without damaging/killing her

oo-err :willy_nilly::willy_nilly:

I have marked 6 this way over the last 2 weeks as well as picking them up to pop in cages etc but still fail on being fully proactive with my management; still willing to learn more and still interested. Am I a proper beekeeper? No more than I am a proper driver despite having covered over 2 million miles in the last 20 years.

 Failed on step 1, will just keep pen in pocket ubtil I do see her

practiced on a few drones instead, actually quite enjoyed inspecting in bare hands for a change.
