Grafting - Queens died in hair roller caged QCs In queenless hive.

I had grafts (all from same hive) taken and sealed in three hives (65% average from grafts taken). After being capped a few days (day 10) I put hair-roller cages on them and moved all the QCs from 2 of the 3 hives to my incubator set up. I was hedging my bets in case the incubator failed and so...

Some dead bees laden with pollen

Had a wee look round the front of the hives after work today and noticed a handful of dead bees with pollen baskets full on the ground in front. I'm only in my second year and last winter they were all tucked up by now so was curious about their fate. It was a sunny and clear day up here...

    2nd brood box opinions

Swarm has drawn 8 frames in my poly lang in a week (day 7) and started on the last ones. They have also guzzled down 10 litres of 1:1 syrup. Queen on central frames and although I didnt see eggs (very dull overhead is my excuse!) there was an arc of honey and pollen over polished (or small eggs)...

    Bees still drowning

I have one of those MB ashforth feeders with the perspex insert. Last year I had a lot of bees falling in and drowning. This time round I repainted the entrance to the feeder and the trough edges and sprinkled sand on to give them a rough edge to cling to. This has helped a lot but there are...

    Demonstration nuc ?

At work we have a few hives in a botanic garden and have had primary school classes come and have a look (from a distance!). We then show them an empty frame and some capped honey and explain about bees etc. Recently we are hoping to visit schools and talk about bees and so we want to buy a...

    Beekeeping down under

I used to live in Australia before I ever took an interest in bees. However, I had a friend visit me from Oz a few weeks ago who saw my hives and has a bit of land back there suitable for his own. He mentioned they get swarms in the yard 2 or 3 times every year and his son is about 16 and very...

MB hive users - help / opinion on frames etc

Bit of advice wanted from folks using MB poly langs. This year I just started beekeeping with a nuc from a mate and was not planning on supering. So I went for the complete hive - 3 full depth lang bodies. If my colony gets through winter I aim to split this coming season. 1. So what do MB...

    Success - finally !

Third queen of the summer autumn and the first to get it right. Having left my latest (and only purchased) queen to get on with it for a few weeks I had a very quick check before work today and lo and behold I had eggs, larvae and capped worker on the first frame I pulled out. Also saw marked...

    Bee and pollen posters ?

I'm looking for some posters on bee brood development times as well as different pollen colours. I have seen a few by various retailers (t**nes) but they are pretty expensive. Anyone know where you can get cheaper ones ? PM me if this breaks any forum rules ?

Duff queen - AGAIN ! Some questions.

So continuing from my other thread about eggs being found last week this was my last post......turns out she is a drone layer afterall - grrrrrrrr. My original queen was laying nice worker brood then the bees in their infinite wisdom supersedured her. Things going fine, eggs found last week...

    Resin from leylandii

I have been chopping down leylandii around the garden now for a few months. Yesterday I noticed some bees circling and landing on freshly chopped logs. Will they gather up the resin and use it in propolis production ?

Overhaul of new garden - bees please !

Moved into a new place in March where the garden has been neglected for about 15 years except for a being cut back just before we moved in. So as the summer is coming to an end we are going to completely overhaul the garden. I realise that planting for bees will not make much of a difference to...

Bees update and fanning in mist ?

Morning all ! Well the mist and cold fog we have had over the past few days continues. I've been feeding the beasts 1:1 syrup to encourage drawing foundation and just to keep them happy as not much foraging going on although in a burst of sun for half hour yesterday they went balistic bringing...

    Eggs :)

Morning all. First ever bees arrived in nuc from my friend a week ago. Previously never seen queen but a queen cell had hatched early June. He had bee through them since then and never seen eggs but we were not worried as weather has been so rubbish. Left them to settle and fed them a bit. I...

Nuc arriving this weekend - not quite ready for it !

Hi guys, Ready to set up my hive and have the site its going in all cleared and ready - just a few final questions. How level would the concrete slab my hive is going on have to be. I dug out a few tree roots and the ground was a bit lumpy so I filled it out with fresh soil and raked it. Is it...
