The cooperative from where i was hoping to rent the extractor shut down, so i found myself with a choice: either crush and strain (three supers, yeah right) or bite the bullet and buy and extractor.

It should be delivered more or less when it's time to take the supers off. Now the bees should be starting to collect honeydew and that should top up the remaining frames in their supers and give them also quite a bit of winter stores. Plenty of ivy in the woods too.

Question though: should I do anything to the extractor before using it (other than take it home)? Give it a good rinse, a thorough wash, or whatever else?

I personally would give it a thorough wash, to remove any tiny bits of swarf/metal that may remain from manufacture, and also because you have no idea of the hygiene habits of the workers who made it :ack2:, or the conditions under which it has been stored before being delivered to you.

While I am sure British (and Italian) manufacturers follow stringent hygiene rules when manufacturing items for food use, the same cannot be guaranteed of all foreign manufacturers.

This one is manufactured in Italy, as far as I know, but yes, I will wash it well.
I guess it's better to risk washing it even if it doesn't need it than to risk it needing a wash and not doing it, if you know what I mean.

This is it.
