Just had a text from the farm where I keep my bees. There is another beekeeper on the land who has just reported that her hives have been attacked by a wood pecker.

I've had no protection all winter and bees haven't been bothered.

Is it too late for attacks or should I sort something tonight (I'm away tomorrow!!). I suspect she's not visited them much over the winter.

Obviously next year I will protect them as a matter of routine.

The plot thickens. I've yet to see the damage but it's a one inch hole and further "pecking" on the joints. She's not checked her hives since the first "beast from the east" though - so who knows how recent.

I found some strawberry netting in the shed so ill drape the hives tomorrow to put my mind at ease.

And have a nose at the damage too....

Colonies very active this week. I'd be a brace animal that tapped on hive 3, I can tell you that!
