That could be it as I only start fondant in January. It certainly does not vanish.

This actually makes a good point that to say "bees store fondant" is a truism is only so at a certain time of year which in turn puts a very different spin on it.

Bees eat the fondant to give them energy to go out and collect nectar.
They then store the nectar.

Ivy isn't the only nectar source late season,
There are lots of other flowers out there.

There may be in Hampshire..

Not here. Ivy flowers mid October.. too late to be a major food source here.

Maybe where you are, nothing where I am, and certainly not enough to fill half a dozen deep frames.

My bees are still bringing in balsum, Ivy, and Fuchsia,

No frosts here as yet, plenty of rain.
