A friend of mine is just starting into the bee world and has been making his own hives - he has been using an old WBC as his pattern, Well until last week when I showed him the FP ply hive that I bought as a bait hive for a job of my OH's.

He is planning to make a few for spares AS etc. as it is easier than wbc.

The only problem I have so far found with his homemade hives is the fact that they have closed floors not OMF. He wants to go down the OMF route now that I have shown him, but i dont know where he can get the mesh, or what to search for on the net.

Help appreciated!!

I get mine from Thornes Link

I needed some in a hurry a year or so ago, and found some at B&Q - sold by the sheet, about 18" (?) square. Exactly the same stuff you get from beekeeping supply places. Sorry, can't remember the price.

The Mesh Co. (or something very similar)

Warrington or somewhere near.

Super rates, super service, very competitive pricing. They advertise on fleabay.

They do some very good deals.

No interest other than a very satisfied customer (after getting prices from elsewhere I hardly believed the prices quoted). Especially if a 'larger than minimum' order is made.

They also have all types of plastic mesh and they will send you some samples if you ask.

get to your car boot sale and buy fire guards as long as the mesh in it, is in good nik and the mesh is of the correct size.

hadnt thought about the boot! only usually go to get rid of stuff (try and keep myself planted behind table else I only spend all my ill gotten gains!)

I agree with mesh from firegaurds but try scrapyards as they will sell it cheaper and you can find mesh in plenty of domestic appliances suitable for bees
