I've done similar. Just waiting for the silicone to dry on the gaps in the aluminium roofs I had made.

Nice work! Mine is similar but not quite so refined.

Hi,

I'm insulating our hive because it's exposed and on the edge of a frost pocket. All I want to know is what criteria people use to decide when (as in season/month) to insulate!

Thank you.
Sarah

When winter starts, Last couple of days in January- early February?

If you're in a frost pocket, can't you move the hive?

External No Nails then push in wooden barbecue skewers to reinforce.
Silicone bath sealant to seal the joins on the inside. Ally tape on the outside

Is bathroom sealant safe around bees? I was going to use aquarium one.

The tea cosy's fabulous! Don't think I have the staying power to knit one like that though!

Good idea painting it, I'll do mine cedar colour!

Thanks for all the advice.

Well i use it and mine are still alive and kicking (stinging) i mean, Aquarium mastic will cost a fortune the same stuff which i have bought a load of can be purchased for £2 per tube from a UPVC company.

Okay, thanks very much. My insulation is really easy to put on and off, however it rather spoils the look of the lovely cedar hive!

There's no need to spoil the looks of your hive - simply put the insulation (whatever you're using) inside a shallow above the crown board or glue it to the underside of the roof (as many people do). You can keep it like that for the whole year.

I don't think the bees are bothered about aesthetics :cheers2:
