I have to say if I as a complete new comer I think I would of gone elsewhere.

Very good post above Pete,I have to agree with your statement regards leaving,I would feel the same.

Members should always have it in mind when posting that replies will be read by hundreds of new beekeepers/members over time and without the new guy's/girls this forum is toast.

Thanks Admin,
I would just like to add that I dont take any comments on here as fact merely the observations / opinions / experiences of the poster, its just their view which in turn helps shape mine, it helps me see a bigger picture and come to a broader view of what the answer may be.
I have read several bee books now and 'facts' that are in some books are overturned in others and I see these as just the authors opinions / experiences.
Talking of books, great big one, collins bee keepers bible page 216 ...... it repeats itself and misses a whole section out about swarm control by using Nuc's ( Its a bit subtle and I read it about 4 times before I noticed) . Just got my £30 back from Thornes after complaining. So if you have the same book they know about it and withdrew the copies on the shelf whilst I was there. £30 was a lot of money for a book that isnt perfect.

This forum at least for me has become an unpleasant place to contribute to due to constant attacks by Oliver.:puke:

As such, while I enjoyed making contributions and reading those of others, I'm going into read-only mode for now.:cheers2:

Just for general information, when a larvae defacates, it does so just BEFORE spinning its cocoon that it then pupates in. This means that the poo is sealed at the back of the cell and so kept in the hive. This is a good clean behaviour on behalf of the bees except when they are sick (as when they have EFB for instance) and so spin a faulty cocoon. The house cleaning bees can then more easily break through the cocoon and have access to the poo so continuing the spread of infection.

As regards to the brown stuff - sounds like pollen to me. Often gets knocked off in the hive amd once through the mesh is then lost as far as the bees are concerned, especially if the gap of the drawer is blocked off (- old cushion sponge from the tip is useful here - especially if you can get it out of the skip before a jobs worth charges you for it!)

I agree - I have seen same on my boards - OMF lets large clumps of pollen drop through: then with a tray in the moisture makes the clumps spread out into the blobs/streaks as in the picture. I didn't worry and I don't think you should.

Thanks for all that... a happy ending after all!

just a load of soggy pollen..... just like this thread!

I have a degree in science, and know how to read and interpret papers, thanks

but you stated
as though it was a fact?

That is very unlikely to be a recommendation unless you obtained it pre-GCSE inception.

Your statement ref new beekeepers gleaning new information etc....

Give these 'new beekeepers' credit for common sense that they wouldn't take it that bees NEVER dump in the hive.

I'm sure they all realise that a dog would never dump in the house, but circumstances can make that a reality, despite the dog's desperation not to.

"Oops! Epic fail" ..... is inexact language, and your 11 year old godson will soon realise he can have a life beyond the drivel inflicted upon him by ill-chosen mentors who now put him forward as a comedian in a situation that he is too young to enter.

Tomorrow, I will phone a man who will, to be exact, probably, know what the brown stuff is.

Ahh seen this pattern before like a relay race when is the batten going back.
GET A GRIP!

Some people just want to argue and not debate, just give it a rest we have the answer now.
Lets just all feel the love and share our knowledge and experience in a nice way.
