Im sure the Lincolnshire based company who own great swathes of the land both sides of the river, and all the banks and fishing rights on the said river would be absolutely destroyed if the water was poisoned by chemicals and they couldn't attract the VERY rich sporting types from the uk and overseas to fish here. Ive never in the many years ive lived here seen anyone spraying or dealing with hogweed or balsam

I did the research when I was chair of the Carmarthenshire Fishermen's federation and we were facing the prospect of serious bank erosion and loss of fishing on a whole river system - miles and miles of internationally renowned sea trout and salmon fishing, much of it classed as SSI and SSSI being taken over by Balsam

Responding to your and Malcom’s post you’ve convinced me to try that in the pond behind the bees which is now only seasonal thanks to the reeds. Where do I get enough roundup?

Yes, but you have to be careful around water courses as there is some evidence it affects fish fry,
That was my thinking at the time. After all, one dilutes the product with water so doing that can't cause chemical decomposition. At the time I guessed there must have been some collateral damage to smaller organisms.

However, it was not the time or place to criticise the actions of a wealthy client.

Some of the Lime trees on Ealing Common are coming into flower as the bulk of the Limes are on their way out. The later ones have darker and more shiny leaves but not sure if they are just covered in aphid gunk. Unfortunately only a small number of Sweet Chestnut in the area but I must get over to Gunnersbury Park which starts less than 1km away to see what they have there. Plenty of Knapweed and garden plants around. Leaving the hives alone for a couple of week now and so they can make the most of the flow before it eases off soon. Already thinking about extracting the summer crop in a month or so. Plan to make use of the club's extraction room and 12 frame motor driven extractor rather than attempting 15 or so supers in the kitchen with a 4 frame manual device.

Classic opportunity to quote Mandy Rice-Davis "they would say that wouldn't they?"
