I wonder, do vegans enquire of the greengrocer if any caterpillers were injured (or worse) during the production of the cabbage they are considering for the making of the splendid soup they will be making for their dinner guests?

Surely even vegans don't eat cabbage?
:ack2:

Collected about 15 dead bees from the mesh underneath the hive entrance - decided to have a quick look at them under the microscope. After about 15 mins of being back indoors was a bit surprised to see a leg twitching - and on closer inspection saw that 3 or 4 others that I had been handling were also starting to move about! Gave them a drop of homey and water, put a lid on the box, and left them for about an hour before returning 4 flying bees to the hive!

Microscope inspection did not reveal anything untoward. Just as a matter of interest - would verroa mites still cling to the body of a dead bee? I didn't see any on the bees I examined. (And before anyone shouts at me, I know that the absence of verroa on the bees I looked at does not mean that there are non in the hive!!! :) )

A sad reflection of the way questions are being addressed when someone feels obliged to apologise for asking it ?
Come on guys and gals ,don't let's reduce this forum to a mine field . Oh! And may I apologise for my less than diplomatic approach on occasion, even though usually aimed at the pompous!

I´m on my annual ski fest in Italy and spotted two very large hives in the mountains.(Large single oblong shaped brood chambers, small entrances, no mouseguards.) Anyone know what type they would be?

I have seen mites on dead bees. They were dead mites though.

I have watched Verroa mites abandon a dead bee before, and crawl away. Disgusting!
I am not saying this is the norm, but witnessed on a single occasion.

Cut up a flexi blue chopping board to make some sun shades and popped them on all the hives with drawing pins. I remember last year the bees coming out as the sun shone and reflected off the snow, only to attract the girls (I know some hate that, but I don't) out and land on it only to perish in the cold.

:eek:I'd complained to the County Council after the flooding I experienced in the apiary over Christmas, this morning I took my local County Councillor David Jenkins (yes, we are related, same great great grandfather)up to the workshops to show him the root of the problem, then I gave him a quick tour of the apiary - not a bee flying which he was very glad of as he took a few stings from the chapel bees last year when we were working up there.
As it was just behind the garden I went up in my teeshirt - still trying to warm up!!!!
