I grew 15 tea trees from seed . They are not hardy: none lasted the winter.

I grew 5 Evodia from seed planted in the house October 2011.. (windowsill covered with clear bottles). (First frozen for two months in freezer).

Now 1 metre tall - 3 planted in garden , two left in pots in the garden - going to greenhouse them over Dec-Feb in case of another winter like last year , and the year before (which killed off lots of plants including a 35-50? year old clematis :-(

WOW 35 to 50 y. What clematis was it?

Finished making the frames to change my Payxxs poly hives to top bee space using the polycarb sheets as the cover/crown board with a feeder hole in the middle and 40mm celotex on top for winter. 7.5 mm bee space. Why you ask in exasperated mode. Because that just happened to be the thickness of the panels I had kicking about. Knew they would come in one day along with the band saw:) Now easy to top with fondant at minimum disturbance and easy to get crowns on next season.

Today I took delivery of 2 one year old trees from a Welsh nursery on ebay. Very pleased with them and they have more if anyone's interested.

Thanks for the heads up.
I had two delivered yesterday. Nice to see such OTT packaging :)
I think I'll bring them on in pots for a couple of years.

I don't have green fingers but most things I plant from seed germinate and grow except tea tree, whats the secret please

I soaked my tea tree seed in a paper that releases chemicals to fool the seeds to think there has been a fire, had a good number germinate and grew them on in a heated seed tray. I now have 30 plants, some up to 2m and going to fleece at signs of first frost......not had one here yet. Also have stick insects on the plants, which survive in small pockets in Cornwall & Isles of Scilly !

Wind had blown the entrance blocks out of position on both hives, tried to reposition the item but they kept getting blown back. So pushed foam into the entrance to close up the gap.

Will put a screw eyelet inside the entrance next year to stop this happening again!

Should have listned to the advice on this topic I posted at the start of the season which was how do you fix in place the entrance block.

I understand we lost a Commercial Nuc at our Association apiary last night as it was blown over and washed out

still a few bees inside ,so we will see if it survives

Put more fondant on and thinking about woodpeckers. Back home in the man cave made my Th*****s solid floors, thinking about making the supers all bought in the sale, and designing my woodpecker guards ready to go shortly.

Not here either.
Snow forecast next weekend.
Looking at the number of dead bees upside down on the wet landing boards I'm thinking of doing away with them altogether.
I have entrances under the floor but I'm sure the bees would manage without the boards.

Two small colonies very active for a few hours in the sunshine yday and the nuc. Two large colonies very quiet. Any reason for this other than one in shade and one possibly slightly cooler due to positioning?

Don't seem to have much problem with dead bees on the landing boards on my under floor entrances - maybe they are just the dead thrown out of the entrance in the morning and not being carried away from the hive as it's too cold.

Not much doing in the apaiary today - went to the Royal Welsh winter fair and bought a load of ratchet straps for the hive at £2.50 each :D. I've since checked their website and they're a little cheaper although there's postage on top. Tasted some honey and had to swiftly find a tea stall to wash the taste out of my mouth :puke: bees must have been foraging on creosote or something

Visited my apiary for the first time in a month, checked entrances were clear & hefted. They are nice & heavy. Next visit will be for oxalic treatment over my Christmas hols.
