You say not many bees but you have added a super to clean up.
You may find you will set them back giving them so much room, also if the temp drops at night they will strugle to keep warm.

I did a temp repair on my queen excluders while listening to the play on R4

They're the 'steel rod grid' type set in wooden frames and over the years the corners have been chewed away by my hive tool when prising them open.....so I've filled the corners with epoxy resin.

Just have to see if it works!!

Added more feed to a couple hives in the garden. Have decided it is more the water they need, more than the sugar.

It started as a kg of sugar in two litres, so well less than 1:1; latterly I diluted it further and they still devoured it. The last lot was diluted even more and they are still taking it.

That certainly means they are getting very little sugar as stimulant but are using a lot of water, for sure.

I might just try water with a teaspoon of sugar in a litre, next time round!

Never mind the weather, the potters are in the semi final!

(Yesterday) completed a bunch of frames and struggled to see too much difference between Th**nes Standard, Thornes Premium, M*ismore and KBS foundations. Still I guess the bees must have an idea

My father's old bee book ( late 1930s I think) talks of spring feed as weak as 1:10 being effective.

Had some spare time at work so I glued and screwed 3 bb's!

Seems like most the 2nd's I bought are all fine with just a filling required.

Lovely day so took advantage of pulling on some 1:1 food. Started to have a **** inside one, pulled out one frame which had some brood on it (Woo-hoo!) got stung (see other thread), nearly dropped the frame, retrated a few yards while they quietened down then decided to forego the remainder of the inspection.

Had my first peep inside this year. Have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of stores they had as I thought that overwintering on one standard nat bx would have been a push with the winter we have just had.

The colony also seemed very populus for this time of year and there was a lot of brood.

With regards to aggression they weren't bad at all- they only started to veil-ping when my friend and I knew that it was time to leave them bee.

So, all in all, a very positive inspection.

Really nice day, bee's flying well, started to check and pick out the strongest units to go to the rape, which should be well in flower in three weeks from now.

Spent the day at the seaside. By the time I got home it was too cold for the bees to be flying. Tomorrow is another day.

Had a late look at mine today, they are dropping sugar out the front of the hives (3) Don't they like it, has it crystallised and are they are dumping it?
