What be this bee?

There was a section on Kenya in ' Honey by the Ton'. Where one of the locals built a long langstroth hive because the bees found it too hot to go upstairs. It was cooler to produce honey sideways. Maybe one reason for low honey yield.
 
One reason for negligible honey so far is a very poor summer - drought followed by heavy rain followed by...............heavy rain. very poor peach crop and other crops struggling as well this year, year before wasn't much better - sound familiar?
