This evening we opened the hive to add a syrup feeder. It was the first time OH and I were around bees without our mentor. And I think we did okay! 
We also needed to add some varroa treatment and swap the old hive floor for a varroa floor. That was a bit exciting because having left a small (single bee space) door at the front we discovered a massive gap to the rear. Which puzzled us at first, until we realised we had the floor in upside down.... sorry ladies gotta move again!
Any way we left them all humming and looking busy!
