Last thing, don't leave your gloves in the shed, the mice will eat the ends of the fingers out, they did with mine!

Mine stay in the car, in the beek crate, with the tools, the suit and the smoker.

Ah, but anaphylaxis is round the corner for all of us beeks and non beeks but perhaps even more so for non beek children and spouses of beeks

I have seen that Erica and the way i understood it is beekeepers children are more likely to get anaphylactic shock by being in contact with bee venom on there skin rather than directly into there skin, i may have missed something though..it wont be the first

Make sure that you zip up your veil. Bending over a hive with the zip open means unwelcome visitors and there is nothing more disconcerting that a veil full of friends!

Just throw then in the bin after use...You have strange mice Enrico...they eat latex gloves in your part of the world?

A. Only keep hives of bees that don't require a suit...a feat beyond most of us.
B. Just accept that no matter how many times you repeat the mantra of veil and zip...it will still not get zipped up on occasions...I now call it an occupational hazard...or a senior moment...those under 50 don't have this later excuse :)

Don't be too quick to make your first inspection. Just leave them alone till then.

But don't be too tardy either, otherwise they may swarm on the first nice weekend of the year (speaking from experience!)

Good thread.

1. Don't think this is easy.
2. But remember it is easy once you understand (well, easier).
3. Listen (Read) all advice but only take from it what you need.
4. Remember that many people MUST think you got it wrong, but from your standpoint, you probably got it right.
5. If stuck, close hive, take time and think about what you saw.
6. Stay positive.

Absolutely that - especially if you see queen cells.
