i have one of those power pack jump starters to power my varrox for treating varroa . I went to plug it in and it will not charge at the mains (i have only used it about four to five times) . Just wondered if anyone here might know what could be causing the lack of charge ....

Chinese built-in obsolescence?

You say you went to plug it in, did you actually manage to plug it in and turn it on?

...is electric getting through, have you checked the fuse?

If it's not charging then it's either the input transformer that's not working or the battery has had it (it's basically a rechargeale battery with a built in charger).

You need to know whether the battery is dead ...

I replaced the battery in mine with a new one from China after I left it over winter and didn't charge it .. result, dead battery. I got a replacement from China for just a few quid. Once you can get at the actual battery you will find a reference number on it .. punch the reference number into google.

This will probably help you in your journey.

You can check the battery is working if you have a battery trickle charger .. if it won't charge you know it's the battery ... it it charges up - it's the transformer that's shot and it's probably a throw away.

Good luck.. not too difficult with minimal tools and a bit of DIY savvy,

What chemistry and how long has it been discharged?

If lead/acid and a long time, it is likely down to operator error and it’s dead.

the plug charger works as the led charging light flashes (there are 4 lights, when all 4 are lit up, then charged), I will have a look inside today and get battery number ..
p.s the car charger (cigarette lighter plugin) also the same result so must be the power pack ...

It's a pretty simple fix if it is the battery .. mine had screw terminals .. I got a replacement a bit like this from China (lot cheaper and exactly the same as sold here including postage !)

I now have a full size car battery I picked up from a car dismantlers and it's mounted on one of those 'Granny style' shopping trolleys - removed the shopping bag .. added a platform for the battery to sit on and rack for a trickle charger with a little auto timer on it ..

I use it a lot .. 12v LED lights for the garden, jump starting the car, anything that need 12v. I even used it when we had a power cut last winter to power a string of LED lights around the house. It takes up a little space in the workshop but it's worth its weight in gold. I can wheel it around to wherever I need it .. when I've used it I plug the charger back in to the mains. set the timer and it's ready and fully charged next time I need it. Total cost ... £12 for the second hand battery, £4 for the charger from car boot sale, trolley from my late mother in law's estate, digital timer ebay £6.50 ... £22 the lot plus a bit of time and patience to find the bits. If I'd had more patience I could have done it for less !

I use a high power motorcycle battery I bought from Halfords. Small and light but lacks a punch
