Sorry. I don’t understand your explanation. The very language of woodworking is only simple to those who know what they’re doing, and those people cannot understand people like me, to whom such projects are daunting.
In any event, an eke costs £4 to buy online. By the time I’ve driven to Homebase and bought the wood and the screws/nails, plus the bits you suggest, how much will I have spent? Surely any saving would be minimal.

Do what is best for you..;)

It’s been a constant theme of this site since I first joined, woodworkers shaming those of us who are less handy. To them, it’s oh so simple. To some of us, it’s not simple at all.

I hope i have not shamed you i was merely trying to help, i will remember the name and offer no more help if it offends you..

That was a bit strong.... It was good advice from Millet. Sometimes the answers to your questions help others on here, me for example, so please try not to be too harsh if they are not much help to you.
I found Millets answer helpful and all I was doing was giving you an even easier option. We weren't being rude or trying to make you feel foolish, just trying to offer a bit of knowledge for whoever reads it.
Keep smiling and good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Buy a length of 2 X 1 inch wood, cut it into four pieces, make a square the same size as the top of the hive you use and screw it together. A five minute job

:iagree: I would do the above but perhaps even sand the eke down and give it a coat of something to preserve the eke . thus it would be a six min job. :icon_204-2:

If you have deep roof then it's all under the roof and is unlikely to fall apart even when constructed by the most hapless, even the Frank Spencers among us could have do this efficiently. :bump:

So after all the grief and woe can I remind you no eke is required.

An empty super works or an empty poly syrup feeder turned upside down with the extra space occupied with something warm.

KISS

Where can I get an eke for £4 online?

You’re right, Enrico. Sorry Millet, too much wine last evening.
But please, when someone says he’s not capable of doing something, respect it, don’t try to give further advice unless it’s asked for. Or if he’s local to you, pop round and do it for him.
As I said some years ago, when posters were aggressively telling me how easy it is to make a hive, I’ve had many years in which to come to terms with my cackhandedness. I suspect it may be because I’m mixhanded, but screws and nails don’t go in straight, I can’t even cut bread to a right angle, and I spent three years at school desperately and unsuccessfully trying to plane a short piece of wood to the satisfaction of the woodwork master. He told me it was easy, and couldn’t understand my problem.

It takes a good person to apologise, thanks. Woodworking crap but manners are good. :)

I know how frustrating things can be when someone tells you how to do it when you simply can not, i have certain issues similar myself (not woodwork) and it can be so frustrating when folk try to explain when i have already said i can't do it, it is certainly easier and less stressful to buy what you have trouble making.;)

How did you know I look like Mr Spencer?.. Now that's what them roofs are for I was going to use it as a sand pit for the children lol . A 6 inch roof to be used when you have an eke in place.. Instead of the normal 4 inch roof. What if you don't have a deep roof?
Cheers mark.

Yes for every Chippendale there is a person who has problems making firewood or rather can only produce fuel. It's the law of averages, at one end pure genius and at the other complete inability.

That's when you need an eke...........hang on a minute :biggrinjester:

Surely anyone is capable of nailing 4 bits of batten together to make a square?

No they are not. it is like saying to someone who is illiterate with math or English that they can spell something or add numbers together, it simply can not be done.
You must be rubbish at something no matter what it is, can you try to imagine how frustrating it is when someone says you can do it and then hounds you..

Algebra is mine.

I even tried an OU course in maths to prove to myself it was crap teaching at school but nope it's me. Numbers I am happy with and got over 90% in an O level prelim but as soon as x and bloody y appear I am stuffed. Totally unable to make sense of it at all.
