Two Queens

Attended a multiple chimney stack today, one flue has a resident colony, and it has been there a while.

Client called me as a neighbour had seen a swarm rise up from the resident colony and swirl down into another chimney.

Whilst removing bees from the room where the fireplace is, I found TWO queens in the room......not strange so far, but both of these were marked red.

Can anyone explain this?

They were both the same year.

If both queens marked, then probably not a resident colony.

I understand a lot of established feral colonies have self marking queens as well.

I get this occasionally - more to do with the fact I've now got specs like jam jar bottoms
