If you knew how much rock salt costs, you would understand why it gets pinched.

But would the local tip accept it?
Yes, ordinary household waste - all accepted at the amenity site.

the scum of Swansea
Now Now JBM I'm sure you don't classify me as scum :biggrinjester:

That's where grammar is all important - the scum of Swansea (implies a proportion) rather than Swansea scum (a broad generalisation) :D

There's a problem with the jobsworths at the tip too,
SWMBO had incident with width of local roads resulting in wheel & tyre being reduced to scrap.
Took it into the town and asked if I should put it in the Scrap metal skip.
Answer was "you can't put that anywhere here we don't accept them"!

I replied, "ok, I'll go & throw it in the canal then"!
.

I had the same problem with a swiveling invalid car seat - took it to the tip and was told 'Can't take any car parts - sorry - has to go to licensed vehicle dismantlers'. Took it to my local car dismantlers - 'Sorry - we only take vehicles' ... So - what do I do ? Dump it on the council offices doorstep ???

It's no wonder some things get dumped at the roadside - it's still in my garage at present - anyone want a Paddy Hopkirk Mk1 Mini seat in need of re-upholstering ?

Went back a couple of days later, put it in the scrap metal without asking.

We have to pay £5 per tyre here, no wonder they are flung all around the county lanes in ditches.
