Fleas may not survive after trying to live on humans but they'll give it a very good try! There must be something you can buy to kill them off safely?

Bontbee.....do not spray the hog with anything, please.
If it has lots of fleas it's ill so let the vet look at it. If you end up needing to treat it ask for something that is safe for birds

Aussie beekeeping friend said that the hedgehogs in the Antipodean Colonies do not have fleas..... boat trip killed them?

Apparently, hedgehog fleas cannot survive on cats, dogs or humans. Which I hope is true as I currently have an underweight juvenile. It's* being fed up for... a Christmas dinner starter?

*I don't know which model it is as I no longer have a glass topped table for it to wander over while I peer at its bits from underneath. Does anyone have any other suggestions for sussing which gender variety it is? Ta
That does not stop them from trying, rabbit fleas also do not live on people but it does not stop them from biting me in my car after the boot has been full of rabbits.

Thanks for the tip, EricA. It seems healthy, no obvious flea/tick burden, eating well, peeing and pooing, bright eyed and bushy tailed, and gaining weight. If it starts to appear unwell, I'll be taking it to our local wildlife vet or the nearest rehabilitation centre - I won't be treating it willy-nilly.

Re gender: you're right, MartinL, I don't need to know, just curious, (but probably not even curious enough to use EricA's suggestion re sexing. Thanks for that, though, E)

You'll be lucky - tried with a young hedge pig a few years ago and noone was interested.
Steer clear of that many tears place though, she's nothing but a charlatan looking for a fast buck and a sob story to milk as much profit out of as possible.

That's changing a little but if in doubt contact any local hedgehog rescue society who will have a list of hedgehog friendly vets

Then, the only people interested in taking the poor soul off us was miss tiggywinkles - far too far for us to take it though.

Lots about now.
We have a very local to us one.....
They have a Facebook page and they post their piggies daily weights. It looks like some competition to see who can get their hoglet oven ready the quickest :D
I know it isn't but it certainly looks that way :D :D

Careful,

the A.L.F. will be raiding & releasing them!

The local Hedgehog rescue give any hogs that are over run with fleas a quick spray of frontline Not the spot on but the spray type in a small quantity, any with moderate fleas are left alone.

Frontline can be extremely toxic in a sick hedgehog
This is the best stuff to use, permethrin based. Just a light spray avoiding the hog's face is very effective.

They maybe wrong Erica, i just try to help the hog's, i take any i find to them and that is the usual treatment, we released five from the same rescue in the garden before it got cold kicked in a few month back, all of which kept coming back for the dried mealworms and dog food.

Jeremy Vine is asking, "is your community segregated" !

Well, half the village came from Newbold Pacey during the Plague?

Newbold Pacey kept the church, xmas carols

a few centuries later we got the pub. :cheers2:

Does that count?

Poachers and those" illegal hunting with dogs" villains seem to be from the town dwelling community. . .
Yeghes da

Thought "genuine poachers" were the very similar to Gamekeepers, or do Gamekeepers come under the umbrella of legally hunting with dogs????

Perhaps it depends if they are hunting with a lurcher or a terrier... and what they are "hunting" ?

The two classes could not be more different, first and foremost Poachers are trespassing illegally in pursuit of game, Gamekeepers are allowed on the land by there employer or who they pay the money too for shoot's, Poachers target all species by illegal means most of the time ie Lurchers, Gamekeepers keep within the law by controlling pest species legally, with snares/ traps and guns, if they have a troublesome fox it can be dug too with a terrier to protect game birds.
The list goes on but that is the main difference.

The Hunt rode through the village today!

2 Very different personality types;

Made me question their origins??
