I don't get your point really, as I don't expect to guess the answer first time. And, if I use TARES, I am not looking for answers that start with TAR at all. I am just testing for those letters in the answer. A green for the T, an orange for the E, a grey for the R or whatever are all clues to the answer.

Absolutely true. I was looking at all the possible answers I could see that started TAR and there were very few, other than the answer they all seemed to have a repeat letter - which seemed unlikely you'd start with so I was just puzzled by that.
