Agree that mostly don't need to find the queen, but I do for reasons already outlined I want to. Have tried the drastic trick to no avail. Neighbours on either side not happy. Perhaps she was small and went through QE?
 
Regards the Queen getting through the QE I did see a Carnie Queen last summer that was so small you would not believe it,yet she had filled 2 brood boxes in a wbc.

I think she was newly mated my skinny one. They seem smaller then, and afterwards their abdomens seem to swell up...... is this true or just what I saw/imagine?

Yes they do swell up after their mating flights and when they mature and settle down to raising a colony.

Think about when a swarm prepares itself for leaving the hive, what happens to the queen?

Now I am starting to think maybe they had just superceded ?
 
The location of the queen cells should tell you what took place.
