Why do folk think it is clever to get stung, it fooking hurts and i avoid it at all costs, i have no allergies to any sting or biting insect in this country but i still avoid stings like i would a bullet, if anyone enjoy's that kind of Pain i suggest you go visit your local Blue Oyster Gay Bar, luckily i don't get exited with the pain of stings..

Apart from buying a decent queen until forced ;)

Amazing the difference decent bees make.

I have recently purchased an OZ Armour ventilated suit as my old one was really no longer up to the job. All I can say after about 6 weeks relatively heavy use in the heat we have recently experienced, is fantastic and well worth the additional few pounds!!

I can now second that. Worked for several hours in mine today (about 23oC were we are), shorts and T shirt underneath..... brilliant...most comfortable I've been in this weather. I did work up a sweat but that was cutting the lawn later in the day.

What about gloves? I have lovely comfy thornes gauntlets; leather hands and cotton arm bits. but stings get through quite easily. I don't like rubber gloves cos when it's hot my hands sweat and things get slippy.

Not so sure that comparing bee stings to homophobic situations is very PC these days. Hmmmmm? If I were gay I'd be pretty peed off at that line really.

Bit surprised the mods didn't pick up on that rubbish.

If you really want some excitement I have a lovely unit which would spend at least a 25 hour day stinging you. For free. PM me to arrange.

Is that a dig at a bit of light hearted fun among normal people who do not think they are holier than thee..i have gay friends and a inbetween gay brother by the way who would laugh at such comments.

Going to make some folk think I'm taking the *P* again.

Being näive and before reading thinking that suits and veils to be sting proof.

I'm now not seeing much benefit between a suit and a baggy set of issue coveralls and a separate hat and veil. Is there one?

Guess I've got to be stung a few more times.

Being as veils don't seem to stop stings and eyes seem vulnerable does anyone who doesn't normally wear glasses wear eye protection when doing inspections?

Isn't that rather like people who say they aren't racist as "I have a black friend" ? This was in reply to Millet's previous post BTW

Don't kick me of... i'm messing about Sorry, however if i did not understand you i still have no clue what you are on about..

Speaking as someone who only has a jacket and veil - and has kept bees for since 2010 like that:
Yes you can wear a boiler suit or similar and make yourself virtually bee proof. Tuck your trousers into wellies, ensure the elastic round your jacket - especailly at teh waist - is taut - and you will avoid most stings.

BUT - and it's a big but:
- dressing up like that is time consuming.
- it can get very hot - dangerously so - on hot days
- there are many things that can go wrong if you dress in a hurry.
- really horrible bees - and I mean really really horrible - WILL find a way in.

When you encounter really horrible bees - those that follow for hundreds or meters , or cover your veil so you cannot see and climb up and down you looking for EVERY entrance to your clothing and stinging your clothing so you can count the stingers in tens or hundreds- you will get stung - a lot.

Hopefully that does not happen often.

But if you have to respond in a hurry (swarms, etc) then makeshift attire means you will make mistakes. And get stung. And human nature means you will make mistakes. And get stung.

I dislike stings. They hurt. But my body no longer reacts badly to multiple stings. So I tolerate occasional multiple stings. But it can get wearing.Especially when it happens at other people's apiaries:eek:

But I don't tolerate horrible bees and requeen asap.So I can live with occasional stings.

What you wear is your choice. But if you don't wear proper attire, expect to be stung badly at some time.

If your veil fits correctly bee stings can't reach your face. Round two hoop type give better clearance distance. Of course badly sealed veil/suit joints can result in bees inside the veil and open season on you 😁

This is why I started the tread, because like you I had double trousers and some good Hunter wellies and a nice cheap suit I got from amazon in a hurry. Worked. Fine till I did my AS split and got stung on the face twice! NOW that cheap suit is not so attractive, however the trousers work well, and I'm still not convinced that the bees didn't come in from me pulling my suit down and not tucking it in!!...

Where's the 'newbie mistake' thread gone?.. :icon_204-2:

Sure I've said this before ;-)
I had several cheap suits and the problem was always the zip(s). Changed to velcro fastened coverall. Wear rugby shirt etc underneath. Use two veils - one a Beefarmer goes underneath the coverall and the other (a handy hood) goes over the top of everything. Works well even with horrible bees. Arm gauntlets go over vinyl gloves which go over cotton gloves. Yes, can be hot, but the confidence in the protection means you can take your time. I also have only two hives now; if I had two dozen it may be a different decision.

When I started I was advised to get best suit I could afford. Settled for a BB wear full suit. Still going strong 8 years later. Really helped my confidence in early days. Never been stung through the veil ( fencing hood) . Occasional sting through the suit and marigolds. A full suit leaves no gaps and I wear cotton gauntlets to cover the marigolds at the wrist. If you keep bees you will be stung.

Before i purchased i did a lot of research on various options , went for the BJ offering in the end and was very impressed indeed .

This is my first suit and new to beekeeping but all seems great , their customer service was also impressive after making a small error .
