Having learnt the rudiments of beekeeping from my father, he has recently told me that his father was the Beekeeping Teacher at Studley Agricultural College for Ladies in Warwickshire. The college ran from the turn of the 20th century until the 1960's teaching ladies skills around animal husbandry, horicultural and other rural crafts. I believe my Grandfather would have been there in the 50's

I have kept bees, with a bit of a break in the middle, for over 35 years and I am as keen now as when Dad first established a hive at our family home when I was a young child. Sadly my father is in poor health at the moment, and I am really keen to find a photograph from the college of hives, ladies beekeeping, or (the holy grail) a photo of my grandfather.

There are many photos scattered far and wide of rural skills taught at the college and many of the records held at the Museum of Rural Life refer to beekeeping, but as yet I have been unsuccessful.

If anyone has such a photograph (I'm sure there will be one) I would be very grateful indeed of obtaining a copy. It would mean a huge amount to me and my dad. Many thanks

either that, or they were set up to 'walk in' swarms

Many thanks. I had seen that one picture, although it pre dates my grandfather by 50 years or so.
Your help is appreciated

This site has a few......

This site has a few photos at the college. They all seem to be a bit earlier than your Gramps (early century) but you might find something...

The college site is now "Studley College Trust". Why don't you contact them with your story and ask if they can help you? http://www.studleytrust.co.uk/ If they don't have their own archives they would (should) know where they went, any docs could be at the Warwicks County Record Office. http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/countyrecordoffice

The other thing you could do is write to the local (to there) newspaper and ask if anybody has any pictures. I did this with family history research, and was pleasantly surprised by the results.

Separately, there's an article about the college here http://edwardianpromenade.com/education/lady-warwicks-horticultural-agricultural-college-for-women/

UoR says >here< that some of their collections have been transferred elsewhere, but it isn't clear where to. Might be worth giving them a call

And, finally, Studley Castle Hotel has a few pictures, somebody might be able to tell you where they got them from http://www.bw-studleycastle.co.uk/hotelinformation/historyofthecastle/

Many thanks bee joyful. I've been down all of those routes except the local press, which I was saving to keep the secret from my Dad. Most of the College material went to the Museum of Rural Life... Very helpful staff there but no joy...

You'll have to, carelessly, lose the newspaper that week!

Good luck.
