Strange goings on

Hi, today i checked on my hives and noticed a circular piece of comb that has been made within the last week or two and it is on the grass under the hive stand. I am baffled as to why the bees have made this. It is approximately the size of two tennis balls and is just sitting on the grass under the stand. Definately not put there by me,and was not there a week or so ago.......any ideas??
