Hi everyone I've been a Beekeeper for a number of year and have been looking for something to store my hot smoker in. The Beekeeping companies charge £50 or more for their fireproof metal boxes but like most of Beekeepers I know I very slow to part with my money.
Today In TX max I saw a dog food metal box for £12 reduced from £14, I think that will do perfectly for me.
Another tip from me, I haven't got much feeling in my finger tips so I use a ' crown of thornes' or one of those plastic plungers with a sponge at the end to mark my queen's . I keep all my other odds and sods in a kitchen cleaning caddy to take around my hives. They can get a bit banged about and often not used for months and other times used on every visit. I store them in an old empty margarine tub that's perfect for the job . Has anyone else got some useful equipment tips?

Build a shed at the apiary.
Thats what i have at one apliary. Otherwise i just use a small honey bucket for my ods n sods and a rectangular one with soda for hove tools.

I do have a Thornes smoker box for one apiary and it is usefull except the internal box can get a little warm with a smoldering smoker.

Yes many beekeepers are slow to part with money. I am not one of them though and have a full time job. Think a lot of the tighter beekeepers are retired.

Can understand if a beekeper has very litte or no money at all, but to hang on to money in principle will only maintain the status quo, because to make money in the modern world, it must first be spent.

If you are lucky enough to find an old lemonade bottle screw in stopper that in the spout of the smoker when you finish will cool its ardour pretty quickly.

Whittled down wine corks work well too.

Yes, I used to use corks but usually lost them; easier to pull a small swatch of grass, fold it over and stuff the spout with the folded edge first.

All these spout tricks are OK until it falls over in the back of the car and starts a conflammation. Easy answer is to use an ammo tin, which has silicone seals to the lid.

20mm round ammunition box, costs pennies and will last forever
We used to have Polish Joe who ran a stall selling ex-military gear when Goole had a market. I haven't seen anywhere similar for years. Galvanized "cod boxes" used to be available when Hull still had its fishing industry. They might have been a bit larger than required though
