Said more about the narrow outlook of the composer of the list than the real world..

I totally disagree
It reflects the readership.

Unfortunately (I'd better specify this is irony as people struggle to 'get' that nowadays :D), we have a shrinking rather than expanding empire so no empire builders, trailblazers and colonists left whose subjugation of the natives and despoiling of their natural resources whose deaths we can mourn and thanks to relative peace for seventy years not many 'boys own' war heroes left to fall off the perch, much to the disgust of the farragists and armchair colonel blimps out there.
I remember the obituary to margaret thatcher and her mate Pinochet - we didn't need toilet paper for days after that!!

My talents are never recognised.

Oh yes they were! You can spell, punctuate, conjugate and add two and two together and get an answer that is statistically significant so your talent is recognised and your university education was not an entire waste of national resources.

Your good manners, I guess, you learned at home.

I read the Saturday's Daily Telegraph list of deaths in the magazine. Primarily actors, writers, models, one boxer and a restauranter ... no-one who who had achieved anything of note. Said more about the narrow outlook of the composer of the list than the real world..

John Surtees died in March last year ... the only person ever to win both the world Motorcyling title and the Formula 1 title ... five world titles in total and a genuinely nice man who was so unassuming you would never know what he had done ... why he was never Sir John Surtees I cannot understand. He had an MBE upgraded in 2016 to a CBE but Sir John Surtees it should have been.

These days knighthoods appear to be dished out for winning strictly come dancing or being an international clothes horse ... when people who really achieved something spectacular are left behind ?

I agree, seems like a joke.

Did it for me when the establishment Knighted Sir Jimmy....child rapist etc
Was astonished when Mick Jagger accepted his title... considering his fellow Rolling Stone refused one... as he was not happy that the State has imprisoned him for relieving himself up against a wall!
