I am trying 'polystyrene' insulation under hive roof, placed on top of the cover board without an eke, with the hive roof on top weighed down with a couple of bricks. Much cheaper than Kingspan, hope it works just as well.
I will be feeding fondant later below the cover board with a thin eke.

Yes its cheaper, though less dense and with poorer thermal properties. I suggest you wrap it in aluminium foil, that will help thermally by reflecting some warmth, stop any bees from 'eating' it and help prevent any errant wax moth larvae from burrowing in it.
 
I use polystyrene. Unhappy habit of shedding bits.

I bind into blocks of three with gaffer tape and emulsion it- reduces breakage and bits falling off..
