Theres a channel on yotube which reviews mouse and rat traps. The simplest and most effective one he's ever seen, and it works multiple times as it's self resetting, is called the dunk the mouse / rat trap.

Fairly simple to build rather than buy, the only decision you need to make is will it be a trap and kill (fill it with water) or a trap and release (something soft for them to land on, but not too hard that they can jump out again) and what bait to use. Peanut butter as mentioned before is a favorite.

Bear in mind that a few years ago someone got a hefty fine and a criminal record for drowning a squirrel in a trap - it was deemed animal cruelty.

Probably not - at least when an animal drowns in it.
Note the accent in the video, perhaps lawful in America?
they seem happy with slaughtering schoolkids so I can't see them getting too upset about a few rats

Amazing and ingenious. It seems unpleasant, but so is using poison or any other kind of lethal trap. At least there is no risk of secondary poisoning of non-target species.

Full the container with gas?
Argon works well from my experience as it's odourless, non-irritant, and heavier than air.
Most people won't have a cylinder lying around though!
