For those planning on paining poly hives over the winter - be advised that masonry paint (such as Sandtex or DIY store own brand) doesn't adhere well in low temperatures to Polystyrene, and will take days to dry if the air is damp.

I found to my annoyance a number of roofs painted last winter flaked very quickly during the spring - and it was a fresh batch of paint too.

Or maybe something to do with the surface prep (or lack of) of the polystyrene. Might need a wash and scrub first, whether brand new or been sitting around.

Is there any paint that will adhere and dry correctly in an atmosphere that is damp and cold as per OP ?

I painted a polyhive in winter 2015 in the garage - cold and damp. The Hammerite Garage Door Paint I used worked well - but took 3 days to dry hard...
