Checked my first split today it’s in a Payne’s nuc converted to 8 frames @ 14x12 it has a side of eggs and 1 frame of brood . Pollen stores and some new drawn comb. Queen looks good to my eyes. So I’m buzzing.
I will see how she develops but right now I think I will call her “Red”

Why? This years colour is White

2001 has a 1 in it
white 1 or 6
yellow 2 or 7
red 3 or 8
green 4 or 9
blue 5 or 0
will you raise good bees

So in effect a 2.5 frame nuc raising a queen not a good way to raise good queen's.
I would of got a mated queen in and feed them honey or syrup or both as a mix.

Also wondering your edging your bets with such a small nuc now?

I'm gonna buck the trend mate and say.......well done, rather than shoot down your enthusiasm

Yea. Absolutely right. This is a beginner’s forum and everyone jumps on the guy’s back.

Well done Mark. I feel your excitement! There’s a flow on, your bees are drawing comb, queen laying eggs, all good! Hat off to you!

So I’m buzzing.
Amen to that!

What trend ?
ONE comment and even that was in jest

Matey said he would call the queen red , not mark it red (although he may have ) then it went to yearly markings followed up by some artillery on how it wasnt a good way to raise a queen . How about "well done matey ,good start ,however perhaps something to consider in the future is ........
"

Well to be honest I didn’t think she looked like an “ Elizabeth” and whilst I believe her natural colour may change as she matures I would describe her as being a Reddey brown , so I opted to call her red.
Her mother is called “blue”for more obvious reasons.
if I do give “Red” or any of her apiary sisters a crown it will probably be a quite garish fluorescent green because that’s what I have.

Aye I could of explained it a bit better my point wasn't to have a dig but to just say they won't raise a good queen in such a small nuc.
Apologies and maybe the op understands where I was coming from?

Never heard that before but I like the nomenclature of calling it crowning rather than marking. Sounds more regal.

I am infact hedging my bets .I was /am concerned-about my n01 hive and decided I probably needed to raise a queen to replace the one in that hive but not from her genetics.

this split came from a nuc I collected in spring from a reputable breeder. the original nuc built up very quick and even though I took a split after it had been hives for a while it is producing honey getting a 3rd super today.

I also have potentially 4 further nucs I will know next week. All from the original no1 hive the queen of which was also rehived onto fresh comb So essentially 6 nucs I will be able to compare and contrast and then combine as appropriate

Fair enough:) you have options and a plan in place fair play.
