Hi Craig, this tree has not had any nuts this year but another one nearby has done really well, it's actually a trunk that's fallen over and re sprouted but always has incredible amounts of nuts, apples and pears done really well, got some cider on the go! Would it be a good idea to cut back the damaged branches just to get rid of the splintered parts?
 
You can cut the damaged branches back but dont damage the bark ridge collar, if they need to be cut back that far. I would err on the side of caution, if it has any live growth on the branch then cut back the damage to the next live branch.
