Is it ok to treat for nosema with nozevit as a precaution?or should we find out if the bees have nosema before treating?

I would ask: Do you feed sugar syrup? If so, is this thymolised (as per Hivemaker's recipe, for instance)?

I have no experience of that product as to whether it is effective or not, but it would seem you may be throwing away money on another of these 'must be better than home-made' alternatives, that are nothing much more than a means of jumping on the band wagon, to relieve beekeepers of as much dosh as possible.

If only precautionary, I would tend towards the cheap and effective 'KISS' option, and if they were infected, I would use Fumagillin as that has been proven to be effective for years and years and years.

its a friend who asked,he is leaving a full super of honey on each hive so he is only using enough sugar syrup to do nosevit treatment,he is treating is hives with apilife var (I think he said).what is the KISS option?

This answer is probably meaningless however.

Normally one always knows before offering a medicine.

There is a standard treatment for nosema in the UK.

I am deeply suspicious of any "all natural" treatments.

I looked to see if it had done any official testing and can't immediately see anything.

Would I use it? No.

The KISS option is as per The 'sticky' from the main index. Called 'Thymolated syrup', IIRC

thank you,I will let him know,he has given me some but I will chuck mine the bin.

It started as 'keep it simple, sweetie' over the pond, I believe.

This side of the pond one would likely get thrown out of the job, propositioned, or looked at as 'different', depending on who the term is addressed to, and by whom. So 'keep it simple, sir' would do, but the 'stupid' version often sums up those that overly complicate a simple exercise.

KISS is a design engineering acronym for 'Keep It Simple Stupid.'

Coined by a american engineer I believe who name was Johnson.

Stupid doesn't mean that the person you're addressing is in any way stupid.

The idea behind it is that there should be no need to over-engineer or unnecessarily complicate any engineering design and it should if possible be easily and simply repaired even under unsuitable conditions such as a theatre of war.

This has been adulturated over the years to have other meanings.

i work on the basis that all medicines are poison, even if it is bacteria they are designed to poison and they will have side effects

I am treating nosmentic hives and adjacent hives with Fumadil B ( 166mg of Fumagillin) but those in other apiaries that a nosema free, i will leave untreated

so i would test before treating..............nozvit, well check the ingrediants first, think is extracted from tree bark

possible it is like vitafeed gold which contains Sodium Salicylate from Bark (just like Asprin use to be from Willow bark)

I would mever treat as a precaution. only if there was proof that they had nosema, to me its like saying I will take a headache pill in case I get a headache , you treat symptoms ,guess work doesnt seem the way to go

I would mever treat as a precaution.

I would never put it quite like that. If the emergency crew at hospital think you may have had (or may be about to have) a heart attack, they will treat as though you have had (or were going to have) one. No messing about in a life or death situation.

On the other hand they would not treat a perfectly healthy person in the same way (advice to change lifestyle, do the cholesterol checks, etc)

Same applies here; precautionary, when strongly suspected (but not confirmed) is one thing, just doing it time and time and time again, without any good reason, is a very much different situation.

Was watching the recent Test series between England and India on an Indian telecast, which was punctuated by adverts for the local telecom - they translated KISS as Keep it Simple Silly presumably so as not to alienate their audience, personally I wanted to :puke:
