nosema treatment

hi all can any one help me with these two qestions. do you treat fo nosema according to hivemaker's recepie regardless if bees have it or not as a precution measure and when is the best time to apply it. thanks all

I do not use druggs against nosema. I try to breed genepool to stand nosema.

In spring some hives are bad for nosema. I see it when they cannot use pollen patty in April.

When I give a frame of emerging bees from a big healty hive, 70% of nosema hives start to build up in normal way. Every spring 1 or 2 queens stop laying for nosema. Abdomen swells and laying ceases.

Nosema is my biggest winter enemy and I resist it with spare hives.

Finman's advice is good if you have enough colonies to sort out the problem, however I see you only have one colony so -

Hivemaker's thymol mixture is usually fed in syrup in the Autumn feed. It can be fed to healthy colonies as well as poorly ones, as it prevents mould in the syrup. If nosema is confirmed BEFORE the winter feed then there are other treatments that can be used that are more effective than thymol. Some members, I believe are experimenting with thymol in fondant which could be applied now, I do not know how successful they have been.

Fumidil B can be used in syrup as an autumn feed. It is not allowed in some countries and there were thoughts that it might be banned in the UK a couple of years ago so everyone stocked up (Autumn 09?) so suppliers ran out for a while.

"regardless", at the autumn feed, which is normallystarts in september after your thymol varroa treatment, The bees if fed with 2:1 thymolised syrup store it and eat it over winter so no ( or little) thymol in your honey

i use a similar formulae but with a few drops lemon grass essential oil and 1gm vit C per kg of sugar

MJB would you let us know what they are,as it is certainly not fumidil,thymol i have found is much more effective than this,in the correct dose of course. And the study below found the same.

Fumidil B was the one I had in mind but I stand corrected. My knowledge is 11 years out of date as Fumidil B is not permitted in France

Mine all got emulsified thymol syrup last Autumn and the one colony I thought may have nosema is still going strong and I think will make it through the winter

in that case wait untill you do a spring feed if they needit and use it to preserve the syrup as come the spring the chances will drop and it will not normaly be needed. i have had to do mine due to humidity problems in the shed bringing it on

Another product, from Central Europe, is a traditional bark extract marketed as Nozevit. Dr. Joe Carson has found it to be effective during his long Alaska winters. HBH has lemongrass, peppermint and sodium laurel sulfate in a syrup base. Nozevit has no EO - plant polyphenols, OPTIMA has EO's, plant polyphenols, vitamins and minerals.

To answer your question Abb, I treat with tymolated syrup irrespectively. I think you will find that like varroa, nosema is a fact of life, but the levels are not.

Do you only clean a hospital when the patients start dying from nasty bugs, or regularly to minimise the risk?

Fumidol doesn't kill the nosema spores, but mitigates the affect of the disease on the bees, by preventing it rupturing the intestinal wall and multiplying. Thymol on the other hand does attack the spores.

I also know the price of prevention and the supposed cure, very little and quite a lot.

I agree, save money for varoa treatment.
