Hi everyone

I’ve been doing some research into beekeeping and have a taster day booked in for September to learn more and see if it’s something I feel capable of progressing with.

I’d like to go to the taster day with at least a basic appreciation of what’s involved, however while reading up it seems hive yield/productivity varies for a number of reasons, one being the availability of nectar and the local climate etc. This is understandable but I wondered whether anyone knew how productive beekeeping is in the slightly colder climates of North of England? I keep seeing blogs stating that in California the bees can produce almost all year but I believe our weather may be somewhat less favourable...

Thank you in advance for any information you can share.

Where are you from roughly Shamus.. i have hives in the north east and i am in excess off 200lb of honey from one good colony and two not so good at the moment...with more building up for next year..

hell theres even guys here who keep bees in scotland;)....bees survive and prosper in areas/countries that have far harsher conditions than the majority of us will face here

Thanks Millet and Ian - That’s reassuring to know. I’m in Teesside and kept coming across a lot of information about warmer climates. Thank you for the reassurance! I’m really looking forward to my taster day!

Regardless of where you are... if you have the right bees and forage you will do ok..

Alas you suffer from renown Teesside spring weather that cold NE wind that surrounds you with sea frets most springs whilst 20 minutes drive away it's warm and sunny. I often see it driving down the A19 towards Middlesbrough, just North of Thirsk you can see the sea fret rolling down off the Cleveland hills and the 10C drop in temperature. Mickbees could have you told you more (from Billingham) but he got banned from the forum for standing up for himself.
Think microclimates....forage....bee types. and weather you won't go far wrong.

Also welcome to the forum.

Thank you, Beefriendly. There is so much to take on board. And you’re right, there isn’t much to boast about in terms of our Teesside weather.

There are local groups in Darlington and Middlesbrough that I’m going to try and reach out to, hopefully their members can assist with their local knowledge and expertise!

We shall probably meet at some stage then.
Good bunch of people.

Neither can he. Banned for 2 weeks is an insult to him for defending his stance. He won't be back.
