Newbie with a swarm of someone wants it......

Now for round 2, following the advice from Pargyle I have made a temp home for the swarm until the proper gear arrives.
Unlike the first swarm though this one is 12 foot up a tree in the middle☹

Definitely keep that in the shade though!

Looks like a good job! I may need to visit Argos even though I have some spare boxes!

Well not textbook but the swarm is in there temp home. So cleared all the branches round it but the swarm was literally at the top of my reach......so cut the branch a bit whilst holding it and snap!
So world record ladder descent and the bees are on the floor...grabbed their temp home and laid on it it’s side neat them with the lid resting above them. Then the only thing that’s has gone right this weekend, the entire swarm has scuttled into the box!
So stood the box up, added the frames and closed the lid. All remaining bees have flown in and there is some on the entrance fanning which I think is a good sign!

All good. Wait until they have stopped flying, and move the box to where you'll put a proper hive for them, and with the entrance hole facing the same way. You may need to rig something for shade.

Thanks, they have just stopped flying and calmed down and I have put them in a full shade area approx 6 feet from where the new hive will go.

That's ok but you may have to move them to the new spot a little at a time (even if in new hive), especially if there are other hives nearby. Much better to put on the final position if possible. A bit of board on top of the box, or leant against it could be ok for shade.

What a baptism of fire you’ve had. Ten out of ten for trying to make some sense of it. Keep going. Next year will be a joy.

Strangely I am enjoying all of it though and it’s got be out of a few other jobs this weekend!

It's always as well to encourage our newbies at this stage ... then let them find out for themselves that the second year is usually an even steeper learning curve ......

Yes, branch is out and 5 frames in. Additional gear is being delivered tomorrow...so more assembling!

I’ve got to start assembling mine - need a set square for the right angle and some outside wood glue before starting to assemble this week after work. Also ordered another 10 brood frames and foundation so have 20 plus the end board for 9 spare - so plenty to be getting on with.

You don't need a set square; you can measure the diagonals with a tape measure and if they're the same it's square.
I've got about 0.3L of Everbuild 502 left from building boxes if you want it. 1L bottle was far too much and now I've built the boxes I don't think I'll use it before it sets in the bottle.

Much appreciated but need some decent PVA for other bits around the house. Good point on the diagonal measurements - got to build an arbour later this year so set square will be needed anyhows - and an excuse to escape the house for B&Q

You need a try-square, not a set square
