Scientific journals are now being made available - free - in a new online initiative --- for access from Public Libraries.

I was alerted by a BBC news story today -> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-25981183

... but it seems that the scheme started last month.
The scheme requires libraries to 'sign up', and the scheme's website lists those libraries that have already joined (and says it is easy for others to join in.)

From January 2014, over 1.5 million academic articles are available,
free of charge, in participating public libraries across the UK.

Students, independent researchers and small businesses can now access many of the world’s best academic papers through their local libraries, a result of a unique collaboration between librarians and publishers, who have made their journal content available for free.

Very interesting .... thanks for that.
It says "in the UK" but I couldn't find a single Welsh library :(

All they have to do is ask - stir them into action!
Surely no reason they shouldn't?
All UK public libraries are welcome to join the Access to Research initiative.

The service is free of charge and quick and easy to join.

If you are a local authority that would like to opt your libraries, please contact us on:

Looks like a welcome addition if you're not near a university library. Can't see many London boroughs round our way signed up yet. Perhaps time to ask your library why not.

thanks for the "heads up", I have emailed Wiltshire Libraries to ask them to join.

Has anyone tried this out? I see Springer are involved, which could therefore include Apidologie.

ETA: Apidologie from 01/01/2007 is included according to this.
