Haha, to be fair the others on the course don't have their own suites or at least they didn't last time I saw them. We'll stand out like sore thumbs:D

Interested In Starting Beekeeping

Ziggymole, I also live in Cwmaman and just retired. I am interested in beekeeping and would like to know how you get started. Thanks.

Hi Retired,

I'm not exactly getting started yet. I have my hive which is almost ready to go, but my site still needs some work and with the weather we're having combined with my hubby's off duty, dry days when he's home are few and far between! I'll be looking to get a swarm next year.

In the mean time I'm doing my best to learn what I can, reading on this forum is invaluable, I'm on a course at Llwydcoed and have a mentor for help and advice.

The first decision you need to make is which hive to go with, most beeks go with nationals, I've gone for a warre, partly because the philosophy appeals to me and partly because I have very limited space for spare equipment like supers, frames etc. Then you need to consider your apiary site, I'm lucky to have only 3 neighbours and a big garden and will try the hive at home, but for most beeks their hives need to be on allotments or farmland etc. You have two choices for beekeeping associations, Cardiff or Bridgend, I'm not a member yet, this may change.

There are plenty of people on here who are happy to advise.

Jan
