Starting to make candles today with the moulds we have, any advice preferably of the none joke varieties pls, I'm in a series mood today
Let the molten wax stand as long as possible and bail, gently, from the top.

No need to use non stick spray on silicone moulds.
you need a thermometer as you should pour your wax at a temperature as near as possible to 70°c I found that the best thermometer to use was a Kilner one used for jam making - it's an all metal one, like a skewer type meat thermometer - so one of those should do as long as it's marked with a proper scale

I have one of those IMG_20211209_142717.jpg

that'll do, the wax temperature should be within 1° of 70°C and poured slowly, a topup may be needed but only before the wax starts to form a crust
Brilliant thanks for the advice.
I have a few metal jugs specifically for pouring wax that are in the box of toys, is it worth warming the moulds up first?

Moulds look good. You need to dip the wicks, looks better
I’d seriously look at filtering your wax a bit more. It’s an awful colour
Third one from the right I wasn’t happy with so melted it and started again. Dirty wax

Interesting you say that about colour I have 20 or so round blocks and half of them are that colour and some are more yellowy pink, is that all down to the rendering?
I kept the temp at 69 - 71c no more when making the candles.

Rendering was no more than 70c

They look lovely, to get the candles to stand up straight I've warmed the base over a hot plate and parchment paper.

What are you using to filter the wax ?..they look like the wax needs a couple more eun though of the filter medium. I use old flannelette sheets cut into circles and placed in a nesh funnel. The candles look so much better when they have a nice yellow/cream appearance rather than the brown tinge. You will also find that clean wax does not smoke ... when you gave impurities in the wax they burn with a smokey flame and they tend to have a different smell ... not as pleasant.
